February 08, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Matsushita Battery Co. Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) has developed a rechargeable coin-shaped lithium-ion battery for high-current discharge. The company plans to begin volume production of the new battery, the CGL3032, in October 2001, planning 500,000 units monthly. It will be used a power source for wrist-worn GPS, compact portable terminals and card-type information tools.

The external size of the battery is 30mm in diameter and 3.2mm in thickness. The maximum continuous discharge current is 1CmA. Its electric capacity is 140mAh/0.2C, up 40 percent from the company's earlier rechargeable coin-type batteries. The charge-discharge life of the new CGL3032 is approximately 500 cycles.
