LLC Current-Mode Resonant Controller IC Reduces Standby Consumption by 25%

June 17, 2019 by Scott McMahan

ShinDengen introduced a new LLC current-mode resonant controller intended to achieve higher efficiency and lower noise in 100W to 500W output class power supplies. The newly developed MCZ5216ST control IC combines the functionality of the company's previous MCZ5211ST with built-in X condenser discharge functionality. Incorporation of this X condenser discharge functionality allows for about a 25% reduction in power consumption during standby.

Typical applications for MCZ5216ST include its use in power supplies for laser printers and other document equipment, audio equipment, flat-panel displays, LED lighting, and industrial equipment.

It is equipped with high-voltage startup and has a 600V withstand voltage starter circuit.

ShinDengen's original control method (asymmetric control) offers an active standby function that increases power efficiency during light loads of several watts and standby, which can eliminate the need for the auxiliary power supplies.

The chip also allows for an increase in the operating frequency up to 500kHz, contributing to power supply miniaturization. A variety of protection functions come standard making it possible to build a power supply circuit with a small number of components.

Input voltage detection mode can be selected from either ac or dc.

The device allows for the transmission of IC operating status through a photo-coupler using a power-good signal (in ac input detection mode). Compatible with higher frequencies, it can operate constantly at frequencies of 500 kHz

Low standby power with a built-in active standby function and burst function are provided. A built-in oscillation frequency compensation function uses input voltage during burst (in dc input detection mode).
