Linear Technology Unveils LT1765 Regulator

December 10, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Linear Technology Corp. (Milpitas, CA) announced the new LT1765 step-down switching regulator that has a 3A peak-rated switch and delivers up to 2.5A of output current from an input-voltage range of 2.7V to 25V.

The 1.25MHz switching frequency allows the use of tiny, surface-mount components and keeps the switching noise above the passband of most communication systems. The small footprint makes the regulator suitable for space-constrained applications such as portable computers, DSL modems and portable instruments.

The wide input-voltage range allows the regulator to operate from 24V systems to single-cell lithium-ion batteries. It utilizes a current-mode topology for fast transient response and high-loop stability. A two-percent output-voltage regulation is maintained over all line, load and temperature conditions; and the 3A current limit is maintained across all duty-cycles to provide full power operation over the entire input-voltage range.

Efficiencies up to 90 percent reduce thermal dissipation requirements. An operating supply current of 1mA improves efficiency at lower output currents and is further reduced to 15µA in shutdown for extended battery life.

The LT1765, in an SO-8, is priced at $4.67 in 1,000-piece quantities.
