Linear Tech Adds Dual, 26V, 4A DC-DC uModule Regulator in 15 x 15mm Surface Mount Package

August 26, 2009 by Jeff Shepard

Linear Technology Corp. introduced the LTM4619, a complete dual step-down dc-dc µModule® regulator system, including inductors and MOSFETs in a tiny surface mount package. The LTM4619 regulates two output voltages ranging from 0.8 to 5V at up to 4A each from an input supply of 4.5 to 26.5V (28V abs max). The outputs are regulated with 180° out-of-phase operation to minimize input ripple current, thus requiring fewer input capacitors.

This dual dc-dc system solution includes all the necessary components for two point-of-load regulator circuits: inductors, bypass capacitors, dc-dc controllers, compensation circuitry and power switches. All components are encapsulated and protected within a plastic surface mount LGA (land grid array) package. Package dimensions are 15 x 15mm with only 2.8mm of thickness, providing a low profile point-of-load regulator for more efficient air cooling in densely populated circuit boards. The LTM4619 is a simple single part dual dc-dc solution in an IC form factor, designed for systems requiring localized multirail regulation from input supplies such as 5, 12 or 24V. Applications range from avionics and medical systems to datacom and enterprise equipment.

The LTM4619 has guaranteed total dc output error of only ±1.5%, which encompasses errors from the reference voltage as well as line and load regulation. As a current mode device with high switching frequency, the LTM4619 has very fast transient response to line and load changes while operating with excellent stability with a variety of external output capacitors. The efficiency is nominally 89% for 12VIN to 3.3VOUT at 4A. The device supports output voltage tracking and safety features, including overvoltage and overcurrent protection.

The LTM4619 is guaranteed for operation from -40 to 125°C (internal temperature). The device is RoHS compliant with the ability to be soldered with Pb-free (lead-free) and Pb-based solder during board assembly. The LTM4619 is now available, priced at $16.75 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
