Level 2 EV Charging Without Separate 220/240Vac Wiring

August 29, 2013 by Jeff Shepard

Poulsen Hybrid LLC a subsidiary of Bridgeport Magnetics Group, Inc. has introduced its unique Poulsen Power Level 2 EV Charging Station. Unlike competing designs, the Poulsen Power Charging Station eliminates the time and expense of running a dedicated 220/240Vac line from a building’s power panel to the charging location. With level 2 charging, most plug-in vehicles need 5-10 hours for a full charge of the batteries. In comparison, a 120Vac Level 1 charging requires twice the time or 10-20 hours for a full charge. Poulsen Power Level 2 charging is accomplished by converting a 120Vac circuit serving the garage area into a 240Vac circuit. The conversion is done by replacing the single throw circuit breaker in the building’s power panel with a double throw breaker that provides the 220/240Vac line to the garage area using existing wiring.

A built-in 1500W step-down transformer in the Poulsen Power charging station utilizes the same wiring to power existing 120Vac outlets, garage door openers and lighting. The savings are especially significant for detached garages or other remote structures where the charging station is installed as there is no need to excavate and replace already existing underground wiring from the main building to the location.

Other features of the Poulsen Power EV Charging Station include: Constructed for indoor or outdoor installation; Clock with built-in 24 hour timer to allow off-peak rates offered in many locations; LED display with Status Bar Graph of charging progress; Switch to select immediate or delayed charging; Timer with 100 hour back-up in case of power service interruption; Built-in electronic overload protection; and Built-in 240V/25A GE GFCI circuit breaker

The Poulsen Power EV charging station is manufactured in Shelton, CT and designed for all brands of electric plug-in vehicles accepting the industry standard connector SAE J1772 including GM Volt, Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius Plug-In. The charging station is certified for indoor/outdoor use and conforms to ANSI/UL standard 2594 first edition, 02/22/2013 and certified to CSA C22.2 No. 280-13, first edition 02/13/2013
