Jeffrey Automotive Introduces Plan for a ‘Do-It-Yourself’ Electric Car

March 05, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Jeffrey Automotive announced plans for a build-it-yourself electric car. The company claims that the car can be built for $5,000 or cheaper, with running costs of less than 3 cents a mile. The vehicle is a two-seater, powered by a 72Vdc motor with an anticipated top speed of 60 mph and a range of 50/60 miles on one charge from six 12V deep cycle lead/acid batteries. The company’s owner, George Jeffrey, was known as a designer and builder of sports and racing cars in Britain in the 1970s.

According to the company’s website, the "Building of the JEFFREY EV1 electric car uses a very simple jig made up of two lengths of timber set on a flat and level floor. Some fabrication of sub-frames is required; a competent welding shop could make these up for you if you lack the skills or equipment to do it yourself. If you are a reasonably competent at ‘do it yourself’ the construction and assembly should not present any difficulties for you. Simplicity and ease of assembly has been the thinking behind the design of this electric car without sacrificing appearance."

The company is offering a special discount for pre-publication purchases of its JEFFREY EV1 plans, which will be regularly available via the company’s website at the end of March.
