iWatt Announces New iW2201 Controller

January 07, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

iWatt Inc. (Los Gatos, CA) announced its new iW2201 digital controller for SMPS units, which features the company's patented pulseTrain technology, providing at least 90 percent efficiency under minimum line voltage and maximum load conditions across the universal input range (85Vac to 270Vac, 50Hz to 60Hz). It is optimized for power supplies that do not require power-factor correction.

The chip senses the reflected voltage of the transformer, which simplifies the design through primary-only feedback, eliminating the need for opto-isolators and the loop-compensation components. The device is claimed to be the industry's smallest digital power supply controller, with no on-board processor, no ADC and no required software.

In 10,000-unit quantities, the iW2201, in an eight-pin SOIC, is priced at $1.50 each.
