IRC Debuts New OARS Series Resistors

March 16, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

The Wirewound and Film Technologies Division of IRC Inc. (Boone, NC) introduced its OARS Series of precision surface-mount, current-sense resistors for automakers adopting the devices for safety circuits in motor control and power regulation applications. The resistors feature a resistive element with an open-air "flow-through" design that keeps the resistor’s "hot spot" safely off the PC board, and allows air to circulate around it, contributing to cooler operations through increased heat dissipation.

The OARS Series resistors are rated for 1 W at 85 °C, (2 W at 25 °C) and 50 V continuous with resistance values from 0.002 W to 0.05 W, with tolerances down to ±1 percent. They feature TCRs as low as +20 ppm/°C and inductance values in the single-digit nanoHenry range. The operating temperature range is from –40 °C to +125 °C. The resistors are designed to fit a standard EIA 2512 solder pad, measuring 0.440 in x 0.125 in with a board-mounted profile of 0.120 in.

The OARS Series are available in tape-and-reel packaging and are compatible with high-speed automated assembly equipment. Pricing ranges from $0.19 to $0.23 based on automotive industry volumes. Lead-times are from stock to eight weeks.
