IR Intros IRF6617/6611 and IRF6637/6678 MOSFET Chipsets

April 27, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

International Rectifier Corp. (IR, El Segundo, CA) introduced two 30 V DirectFET MOSFET synchronous buck converter chipsets for advanced notebook computer designs. Suitable for compact, battery-efficient, portable and mobile computing, the chipsets also enable circuit designers to shrink high-frequency, high-current dc-dc converters used to power high-end desktop computers and servers, as well as advanced telecom and datacom systems.

Each chipset consists of a control MOSFET and a synchronous MOSFET, with each device tailored to maximize performance in their role within a synchronous dc-dc buck converter circuit. The first chipset, the IRF6617 control FET and the IRF6611 synchronous FET, is designed for performance up to 20 A per power channel in high-density, space-restricted circuit boards. The second pair, the IRF6637 control FET and the IRF6678 synchronous FET, is designed for increased thermal performance in applications requiring greater than 20 A per power channel.

The IRF6617 control FET is housed in a small can DirectFET package while the IRF6637 control FET housed in the medium can DirectFET package. Both synchronous FETs are housed in the medium can DirectFET package. The 30 V DirectFET MOSFETs are now available. Pricing in 10,000-unit quantities are $1.25 each for the IRF6678, $1.09 for the IRF6611, $0.91 for the IRF6637, and $0.87 for the IRF6617. Prices are subject to change.
