IR Debuts New M Series Family of IGBTs

October 09, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

International Rectifier Corp. (El Segundo, CA) introduced the new M Series family of 600V short-circuit-rated IGBT/FRED co-pack devices for sub-2HP industrial and appliance motor drives.

The new devices offer an 18-percent-lower saturation voltage than previous generation short-circuit-rated devices. The lower saturation voltage reduces conduction losses by up to 25 percent at 50-percent duty cycle operating conditions, allowing designers to reduce heatsink size to achieve more compact and cost-effective designs.

The IRG4BC15MD, IRG4BC20MD and IRG4BC20MD-S of the M Series offer a VCE(on) as low as 1.85V at 100 degrees C and have a 10ms short-circuit capability at full 15V gate drive input. The new M Series devices are optimized to minimizing switching losses in the 4kHz to 10kHz operating frequency range.

The M Series IGBTs are designed for use in the bridge configurations found in motor drives. The IGBTs are co-packaged with HEXFRED ultra-fast, ultra-soft recovery anti-parallel diodes, which reduce or eliminate snubber components and minimize switching losses as well as noise and EMI.

"The new M Series IGBTs are an excellent alternative for compact, efficient, cost-effective and rugged motor drives for sub-2HP applications," said Alberto Guerra, director, motor drive sector management. "IR offers IGBTs with optimized switching speeds that enable the designer to select the best device for the particular topology and operating frequency."

The new co-pack IGBTs are available now. Pricing for the new devices begins at $1.10 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
