IR Debuts IR2304 and IR2308 Driver ICs

July 29, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

International Rectifier Corp. (IR, El Segundo, CA) introduced the multi-function IR2304 and IR2308 600V, high-side and low-side, driver integrated circuits (ICs) with integrated protection features for half-bridge metal-oxide silicon field-effect transistor (MOSFET) or insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) circuits used in lighting ballasts, power supplies and motor drives.

The IR2304 is designed for low-drive current with 60mA/130mA output source/sink capability, enabling a lower-cost solution and simplifying circuits for smaller MOSFETs or IGBTs such as the IRF830 or IRFBC30. The IR2308 is a rugged driver with two non-inverting inputs and cross-conduction protection, with a drive capability of 120mA/250mA, optimized for larger MOSFETs and IGBTs or high-frequency applications.

The devices feature maximum design flexibility; low propagation delays for turn-on and turn-off; accurate propagation delay matching of both channels to simplify circuits and support high-frequency switching up to 100kHz; a high-side and a low-side driver output controlled via two separate CMOS/LSTTL (3.3V, 5V and 15V input logic-compatible) inputs; and under-voltage lockout switches that turn off both outputs as soon as the supply voltage falls below 4.7V (the outputs are released when the supply voltage exceeds 5V).

The new driver ICs are available immediately. The IR2308S is $1.35 each in 1,000-unit quantities, and the IR2304S is $1.15 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
