IR Debuts iPOWIR DC-DC Conversion Technology

September 16, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

International Rectifier (IR, El Segundo, CA) introduced three new multiphase, high current dc-dc converter reference designs. All three reference designs use the iP2001 device, a building block for 5V to 12V input, 1V to 2V output synchronous buck converter circuits.

The new reference designs offer high efficiency in a compact footprint. For example, the IRDCiP2001-C four-phase converter reference design offers up to 88.5 percent efficiency at 80A full load, 1.6Vout and 500kHz in with no air flow. This represents an efficiency improvement of up to 10 percent over a discrete solution.

The iP2001 is based on IR’s iPOWIR technology, a flexible platform designed to simplify power-conversion circuit design. Layout-critical passive components and optimized power semiconductors are arranged in a compact ball-grid array package. One iP2001 device replaces up to 11 discrete components, significantly reducing part count and footprint, and eliminating the need to specify, qualify, procure and assemble critical discrete components. The iP2001 device only requires a multiphase controller, input and output capacitors and output inductors to enable a fully functional multiphase synchronous buck converter.

The iP2001 devices are now rated at 20A, an upgrade from the original 15A rating. The IRDCiP2001-A reference design is a two-phase dc-dc converter capable of up to 40A, the IRDCiP2001-B is a three-phase buck converter capable of 60A, and the IRDCiP2001-C is a four-phase 80A buck converter. The reference designs use one iP2001 device per phase.

"Innovative ICs, MOSFETs and IR’s power management expertise are all combined in the iP2001 building block. Designing with iPOWIR technology devices simplifies design and ensures extremely high efficiency. The new reference designs demonstrate this innovative technology for the high current and fast transient response times required by today’s power-hungry CPUs, NPUs and ASICs," said Chris Bull, senior product marketing manager.

All three reference designs are fully assembled, tested and documented and are available immediately. Pricing is $335 for the two-phase IRDCiP2001-A, $365 for the three-phase IRDCiP2001-B and $395 for the four-phase IRDCiP2001-C. The 20A iP2001 devices are available now. Pricing is $11.01 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
