Intersil Offers RS-485/RS-422 LINEARLINK Family

June 08, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Intersil Corp. (Milpitas, CA) announced the launch of a new family of LINEARLINK™ RS-485/RS-422 high-performance data transceivers that are suitable for factory automation, security networks, KVM switching, industrial/process control networks, building environmental control systems, HVAC control systems, level translators and RS-232 "extension cord" applications. The ISL8485, ISL8490 and ISL8491 high data rate RS-485/RS-422 transceivers are the first three members of the family, and offer up to 5Mbps data rates with a peak-to-peak signal swing.

The ISL8485, ISL8490 and ISL8491 new-generation transceivers offer designers an upgrade in performance and signal integrity, especially for long-run applications, and are guaranteed to operate over a ±10% supply range. The ISL8485 is a half-duplex transceiver offering multiplexed receiver (Rx) inputs and driver (Tx) outputs to support Rx and Tx disable functions, in an eight-lead package. The ISL8490 and ISL8491 operate full duplex with simultaneous transmit and receive.

All three RS-485/RS-422 transceivers offer 300µA of quiescent current, a –7V to +12V common-mode inputvoltage range, and Class 3 ESD protection (>7kV HBM) on all pins. Both driver output current and thermal-limiting protection features are built into each IC. Package options matching competing products include 8-lead and 14-lead SOIC and PDIP to accommodate drop-in compatibility.

The ISL8485, ISL8490 and ISL8491 are available now, all with industrial temperature ratings. Pricing for 100-unit to 999-unit quantities is $1.05 each for the ISL8485IB, ISL8490IB and ISL8491IB in an SOIC package, and the ISL8485IP, ISL8490IP and ISL8491IP in a PDIP package.
