Intersil Intros Endura ISL6605 MOSFET Driver IC

January 16, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Intersil Corp. (Milpitas, CA) announced the new Endura™ ISL6605 synchronous-rectified buck converter IC, which offers a high degree of integration with high performance in a small package. Target applications for the ISL6605 include core power for both Intel® and AMD® microprocessors; high-frequency, low-profile dc/dc converters; high-current, low-voltage dc/dc converters; and synchronous rectification for isolated power supplies.

The ISL6605 is a high-frequency, 4A, dual-MOSFET driver optimized to drive two n-channel power MOSFETs in a synchronous-rectified buck converter topology. Package options for the ISL6605 include the eight-lead, small-outline, integrated circuit package, and the small 3mm x 3mm, quad-flat, no-lead (QFN) package. The high switching-frequency capabilities of the ISL6605 and the small size of the QFN package enable small low-profile converter designs.

The ISL6605 is biased by a single, low-voltage, 5V supply and minimizes lower-driver switching losses for high MOSFET gate capacitance and high switching-frequency applications. Each driver is capable of driving a 3,000pF load with an 8ns propagation delay and less than 10ns transition time. The ISL6605 implements bootstrapping on the upper gate with an internal bootstrap Schottky diode, reducing implementation cost and complexity. The ISL6605 features a 4A sink current for the lower gate driver, which is capable of holding the lower MOSFET gate off during the phase-node rising edge to prevent shoot-through power loss.

The ISL6605 is available now. The ISL6605CB is priced at $0.99 each and the ISL6605CR is priced at $1.05 each, both in 10,000-unit quantities.
