Intersil Delivers ISL6161 Hot-Plug Power Controller

March 26, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Intersil Corp. (Irvine, CA) announced its new dual-rail, hot-swap controller targeted primarily for the new PCI Express bus. The new Endura™ ISL6161 allows boards to be safely inserted and removed from live backplanes. The IC controls both 12V and 3.3V power buses, offering programmability and fast-response protection. In addition to PCI Express, the ISL6161 is also well suited for general power distribution control and other hot-swap and hot-plug applications.

The ISL6161 controller features under-voltage monitoring and power-good notification, programmable over-current detection and fault isolation, programmable current regulation, programmable current limit time to latch off, adjustable turn on ramp for soft-start, and fast 1µsec response to a dead short.

The ISL6161 is available now. The price, based on 1,000-piece quantities, for the ISL6161CB in the 14-lead SOIC package is $2.70 each.
