International Rectifier Introduces New HEXFET Power MOSFETs for Offline SMPS

July 09, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

International Rectifier (IR, El Segundo, CA) introduced new benchmark and high-performance devices optimized for 1kW output, hard-switching converters. These devices are upgrades to IR's industry-leading family of HEXFET power MOSFETs for offline switch-mode power supply (SMPS) applications.

IR has increased ruggedness and reliability by increasing avalanche energy, dv/dt turn-off failure immunity and Cdv/dt immunity. Power dissipation is reduced with lower Rds(on). The new HS-optimized HEXFET power MOSFETs have low gate-charge characteristics to simplify drive circuitry.

"Our extensive research and development efforts enabled us to understand all the nuances of hard-switching converter topologies," said Carl Blake, technical marketing manager for SMPS applications at IR. "Our new optimized HEXFET power MOSFETs match system pricing expectations while increasing ruggedness and reliability. IR's wide range of MOSFET technology and fabrication processes help customers match the best devices to their power supply system budget and performance targets."

The new MOSFETs are available in industry-standard, Super-220 and Super Dpak packages. Pricing for the high-performance MOSFETs starts at $1.67 in quantities of 10,000.
