International Rectifier Announces New IRL3714 and IRL3715 MOSFETs

July 26, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

International Rectifier (IR, El Segundo, CA) announced an extension to its line of 20V HEXFET power MOSFETs. The new 20V IRL3714 and IRL3715 MOSFETs are designed to replace more expensive 30V devices with similar or better performance.

The 10 devices are designed for 12V-input single- and multi-phase buck converters for motherboards using next-generation, GHz-class microprocessors. In desktop computers, the raw ac-line input is converted to a 12Vdc output using a conventional box ac/dc converter. The 12V-regulated input is then buck-converted to the voltage required by the CPU using a point-of-load converter.

Carl Blake, technical marketing manager for dc/dc products, commented, "In high-volume applications, CPUs require about 30A, usually delivered with a two-phase synchronous buck converter. The power-conversion circuits nominally provide 80-percent efficiency at full load. Achieving this efficiency level at a low cost is a challenge that can be met by replacing 30V MOSFETs in an existing design with IR’s new 20V devices."

The new 20V MOSFETs come in a variety of surface-mount and through-hole packages. They are currently available, with pricing starting at $0.22 in 10,000-piece quantities for US delivery.
