International Rectifier Announces Expansion of Fast Recovery Epitaxial Diode Family

February 12, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

International Rectifier (IR, El Segundo, CA) announced the expansion of its fast recovery epitaxial diode (FRED) family to include four new 400V ultrafast recovery diodes. The new 8ETU04, 16CTU04, 30CPU04 and 60EPU04 diodes have current ratings from 8A to 60A and are appropriate for 48V output switch-mode power supply (SMPS) systems. Typical applications include data communication and telecommunication system equipment.

IR claims that the new 400V FREDs are made with an exclusive process to ensure that the reverse recovery wave shape is stable and spikeless over a wide temperature range, thus reducing unwanted electrical noise. In addition, the company maintains that the low forward voltage drop reduces conduction loss, and that the low leakage current reduces switching loss.

Stephen Oliver, technical marketing manager at IR, commented, “The new diodes have fast recovery time, combined with a soft recovery waveshape to reduce or eliminate the need for snubber components in the output circuit. The low forward-voltage drop reduces conduction losses, and low reverse recovery current reduces switching losses. All features combine to significantly reduce power dissipation, operating temperature, physical size, weight and cost while increasing power supply efficiency and reliability."

Pricing for the new 400V fast recovery epitaxial diodes begins at $0.45 each in 10,000-unit quantities for the 8ETU04. All devices in the 400V family are currently available.
