Infineon Adds to CoolSET F2 Semiconductor Family

May 19, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Infineon Technologies AG (Nuremberg, Germany) announced new additions to its CoolSET F2 family. The new products in the TO220 package are designed for output-power ratings up to 240W, and conform to the new EU minimum heat-generation guidelines. The CoolSET F2 family is suitable for adapter power supplies, integrated power supply solutions, set-top boxes, or general-purpose auxiliary power supply units.

The CoolSET F2 products combine a power MOSFET implemented in the metal-oxide semiconductor (CoolMOS) technology with a fixed-frequency, pulse-width modulation, control IC. The low switching and conduction losses of the CoolSET devices lead to a marked reduction in heat generation. Both TO220 versions, the CoolSET ICE2A765P and the ICE2B765P, integrate a CoolMOS with a drain-source, on-state resistance of only 0.5 ohm and a drain-source breakdown voltage of 650V. Power ICs in the TO220 package exhibit on-state resistances of 0.8 ohm and above.

The new 240W CoolSET F2 versions in the TO220 multi-chip package feature an array of built-in monitoring, protection and energy-saving functions. Highlights include the current-mode control function with integrated over-shoot minimization, MOSFET temperature sensing by means of an internal sensor for instantaneous shutdown in the event of reaching a critical junction temperature, as well as an under-voltage lockout function to prevent destruction of the CoolMOS as a result of incorrect drive-voltage levels.

The new TO220 devices in the CoolSET F2 family, the ICE2A765P and ICE2B765P, are available in volume quantities. In quantities of 10,000, the unit price is Euro 1.26, both for the ICE2A765P device and for the CoolSET variant, the ICE2B765P.
