Increased Current Ratings for 40mm Phase Control Thyristors

June 29, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

IXYS UK, IXYS Corporation's announced the improved performance of two recently launched 40mm die pressure contact phase control thyristors with voltage ratings of 1.4KV and 1.8KV, respectively. The improved ratings of the N1075LN180 and the N1140LN140 were the result of bench marking the actual performance of the devices in testing. This evaluation has confirmed a lower thermal resistance and higher maximum junction temperature which reflects in the device rating as higher average current ratings. Average current for the 1400V part increases from 1140A to 1315A and for the 1800V part the current rating extends from 1075A to 1240A.

The technology of the devices was announced in the November 2013 launch, which included a new silicon die with advanced thermal bonding to a metal disc and encapsulated in a rugged hermetic ceramic packages. The new improved package design has fewer material interfaces and a much improved gate contact, with reduced thermal resistance and enhanced electrical performance. The devices, which have 58mm overall diameter and 26mm package height, comply with the Jedec TO200AB outline.

The improved performances of these devices will further encourage the replacement of the older designs in the same mechanical footprint, which are in the process of being phased out as customers take advantage of these improved products.

“These improved ratings represent a 15% increase in the average current rating and therefore power handling of the new parts, further extending the advantages of these new introductions over our older designs. These revised ratings are part of IXYS UK’s commitment to continue to improve and re-validate the performance of our devices to ensure that the customer gets the best value in amps per dollar,” commented Frank Wakeman, IXYS UK’s Marketing and Technical Support Manager.

Designations for the two devices remain unchanged: N1075LN180 (Vdrm/Vrrm 1800 Volts and Itav 1240A) and N1140LN140 (Vdrm/Vrrm 1400 Volts and Itav 1315A). Typical applications include soft starters, DC drives, and all controlled rectifier applications which require the higher reliability of a press-pack at these current and voltage ratings.
