Green Mountain Energy Promotes New Solar Energy Facility

April 18, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Green Mountain Energy (South Burlington, VT) customers who support Solar for the Future, a power blend that specifically supports the development of new solar facilities, will now be served by a new 100kW solar energy facility, developed by GreenMountain.com. The solar power system will be located atop PowerLight Corp.'s new solar panel manufacturing plant in Berkeley, CA. The system will use high-efficiency AstroPower silicon solar cells and will generate clean power that will be purchased by GreenMountain.com.

The Solar for the Future product is certified by Green-e, an independent organization that certifies electricity products based on environmental criteria. Solar for the Future currently offers California residents the opportunity to support 100-percent renewable energy. As more customers in California, Pennsylvania and New Jersey sign up for Green Mountain Energy products, GreenMountain.com plans to develop additional wind and solar facilities to support clean power.

The new solar facility is the largest of its kind in the Bay area. Another project nearing completion is the Green Mountain Wind Farm in Garrett, PA. The 10.4MW facility, to be operated by National Wind Power Inc., is on schedule to begin providing electricity to the grid on May 1, 2000.
