GES Forms New DMFC Company, MCell Products

August 03, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Giner Electrochemical Systems LLC (GES, Newton, MA) announced that it has formed a wholly owned new company, MCell Products Inc. (MCell) to commercialize its direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) technology. MCell, which has the charter to be a global supplier of DMFC products in the 100W to 5,000W range, is presently negotiating with a number of select parties to form strategic alliances and expects to make announcements in the near future.

MCell is currently engaged in raising new funds for its projected three-year commercialization effort. The new company is also currently accepting orders for pre-production prototype units for field trials to strategic customers on a confidential basis. MCell projects the selling price of the 150W system in commercial quantities to be less than $500, with further drops anticipated with higher volumes and ongoing technology improvements. Higher power products would be priced in the range of $2,000/kW at introduction.
