Gate Driver for PMSM Servo or BLDC Motors up to 100A

Trinamic Motion Control GmbH & Co. KG introduced a new high-power gate driver for PMSM servo or BLDC motors. The chip allows for powerful and flexible designs with a high current profile perfectly matching the motors, according to Trinamic.

The TMC6200 gate driver can drive a wide range of motors from W to kW, making it suitable for applications such as industrial drives, textile machines, pumps, factory or lab automation, robotics, CNC machines, or other applications using PMSM FOC drives and BLDC motors.

"Engineers deal with several limitations during the design process, time being the most important one. The TMC6200 complements the TMC4671 hardware-based servo controller building blocks and offers programmable safety features like short detection and overtemperature thresholds, enabling robust and reliable designs using an off-the-shelve building block," informs Michael Randt, Founder and CEO of Trinamic.

Due to three in-line sense resistors, the current measurement is robust against PWM noise. The in-line resistors make the TMC6200 gate driver suitable for delta-sigma current measurement, which is implemented in the TMC4671. This type of measurement is more effective than bottom shunt measurement, which needs blanking out around the switching events and can only be used with SAR ADCs.

With six external MOSFETs and two or three sense resistors, the gate driver integrates the full high-voltage portion of a PMSM drive system for 12V, 24V, or 48V including in-line current sense amplifiers with programmable amplification.

Offering SPI controlled operation including diagnostics as well as stand-alone operation, the driver IC enables flexible applications that can quickly adapt to new requirements and use cases.

Software controlled drive strength allows in-system EME optimization. Programmable safety features such as short detection and over-temperature thresholds along with the SPI interface for diagnostics allow robust and reliable designs. With the TMC6200, a minimum number of external components is required to build a rugged drive with full protection and diagnostics.

The TMC6200 is available beginning this month via Trinamic's distribution channels, and it comes as a 9mm x 9mm2 TQFP48 package.
