Galaxy Launches Taurus Series of DC/DC Converters

June 26, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Galaxy Power Inc. (Westborough, MA) today introduced the Taurus series of 40A standard half-brick dc/dc converters. The Taurus converters use a patent-pending architecture to deliver up to 93-percent efficiency for a 3.3V output at 20A and 90 percent at full load.

The Taurus series is surface-mount assembled on a double-sided printed circuit board. The company offers three standard packaging configurations, including open-frame, heatsink ready and heatsink attached.

Each converter is controlled by a microcontroller to maximize functionality while decreasing component count. The converter turn-on and turn-off delays, for example, can be controlled to allow easy sequencing of the converter with no additional circuitry required. The design has been verified to turn-on with a back-bias on the output commonly found during power sequencing of today's digital designs.

The Taurus Series is available in output voltages of 5.0V, 3.3V, 2.5V, 1.8V, and1.5 V, and two input voltage ranges: 36V to 75V and 18V to 36 Vdc. Optional configurations include extra power pins and an industry-standard case pin for connection to the optional metal baseplate or heatsink.

The Taurus line of converters will be available starting in June 2000. The converters will sell for $99 when purchased in 1,000 piece quantities.
