July 26, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

FuelCell Energy Inc. (Danbury, CT) announced it has broken ground on its new manufacturing facility in Torrington to meet demand for its Direct FuelCell (DFC) power plants. The 65,000-square foot facility will allow for the expansion of manufacturing capacity of power plants to 50MW annually in 2001, ramping up to an anticipated annual production capacity of 400MW in 2004. The facility, which is planned to include approximately $16.0 million in new equipment, is expected to be completed by January 31, 2001."These orders from around the globe validate our technology for producing clean energy," said Christopher R. Bentley, executive vice president and head of manufacturing operations. "Construction of this larger facility furthers our commercialization progress, bringing us closer to our goal of being recognized as the premier manufacturer of clean, efficient and cost-competitive DFC power plants. By locating a short distance from our existing plant, we can draw from the skilled labor force in the Torrington area, while building on the experience gained from operations at our current manufacturing facility."
