FPL Energy Announces Plans for New OK Wind Farm

June 29, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

FPL Energy LLC (Juno Beach, FL), a subsidiary of FPL Group Inc. (Juno Beach, FL), announced that it will build, own and operate a new wind farm in Oklahoma capable of generating up to 106.5 MW. It will sell the electricity output to the Public Service Company of Oklahoma, a wholly owned operating subsidiary of American Electric Power, under a long-term contract.

FPL Energy expects to construct up to 71 1.5 MW wind turbines on more than 3,800 acres near Weatherford in Custer County, OK. The turbines will have a generating capacity of up to 106.5 MW, providing enough electricity to power more than 31,000 homes. When complete, the Weatherford Wind Energy Center will be the largest wind farm in Oklahoma.

The company said the project is contingent on the extension of the federal wind energy production tax credit (PTC), which expired at the end of 2003. Construction of the project will begin only after an extension of the PTC is approved by Congress and certain other approvals are obtained.
