Ford Delivers First P2000 LSR Hybrid-Electric Vehicle to the DOE

Ford Motor Company (Dearborn, MI) claims that it will deliver the first "no compromise" family-oriented HEV, the P2000 LSR, to the Department of Energy (DOE) in early October 1999. According to Ford, they will also become the first automaker to deliver an extremely fuel-efficient mid-sized family sedan under a DOE hybrid contract.

The P2000 LSR is claimed to achieve more than 60mpg and has a driving range of 420 miles on a tank of fuel. The Direct Injection, Aluminum Through-Bolt Assembly is claimed to be approximately 35 percent more efficient than conventional gasoline engines. It is a four cylinder, 1.2-liter compression-ignition, direct-injection engine that generates 55kW. Each component in the P2000 LSR is designed to maximize weight while delivering safety, strength, stiffness and durability.

"The goal of the program is to double the fuel economy in a mid-sized sedan in city driving," said Wayne Johnson, manager of Vehicle Electronic Systems.
