Fairchild Semiconductor Expands 3.3V Optocoupler Selection

February 22, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Fairchild Semiconductor has developed 3.3V optocoupler products that the company says offer excellent isolation, strong noise immunity and superior performance over a wide temperature range (up to 110°C).

Industrial applications operate in harsh environments where electrical signals are processed in the presence of transients or continuous high voltages. Isolators, such as optocouplers, are instrumental in avoiding downtime from unexpected errors due to noise. These optocouplers help industrial designers create robust systems with low transmission error rates, low system failure rates and proven reliability over extended periods of time.

The FODM8061 with open collector output and the FODM8071 with logic gate output feature what the company says is the industry’s highest common mode noise immunity (CMR) of 20kV/µs minimum and support a wide operating temperature range of -40 to +110°C – important features for harsh industrial environments.

These devices offer a wide supply voltage range of 3.3 to 5V, facilitating logic-level translation. Housed within a compact 5-pin SO package, these devices enable a smaller footprint for space-constrained applications. These new additions are part of Fairchild’s comprehensive portfolio of high performance optocouplers that offer best-in-class noise immunity resulting from its proprietary coplanar packaging technology, Optoplanar®. The Optoplanar technology ensures safe insulation thickness of more than 0.4 millimeters in attaining reliable high voltage isolation, certified by UL1577 and IEC60747-5-2 standards.

The units are priced (each, 1k pieces) at FODM8061 US$1.19 and FODM8071 $1.55 with a delivery of 8 weeks ARO.
