October 11, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Evercel Inc. (Danbury, CT) has signed a joint Memorandum of Understanding with Oxygen SPA (Padua, Italy) and Eurosolare, the solar energy division of the ENI Group (Rome, Italy), to develop a series of solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) maintenance and charging stations in major cities across Italy for use with Evercel's nickel-zinc and traditional batteries. The charging stations will be used with Oxygen's two-wheeled EVs as well as with other EVs and will allow users to fast-charge the Evercel nickel-zinc battery in only fifteen minutes. The first two stations are planned for Rome and a third station is expected to be built in Palermo by December 31, 2000. Other major cities will follow with an expansion of 250 stations by the end of 2002.Giampiero Duglio, CEO of Oxygen, further commented, "This agreement finally pulls together a team with the expertise and resources to make owning and using an EV not only a possibility, but a rewarding and enjoyable experience. No more noise; no more pollution; and no more concerns about range or availability."
