ENrG Opens New Fuel Cell Facility

July 17, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

ENrG Inc., a Buffalo-based technology firm, has officially opened its doors. The company's new location in the town of Tonawanda is a 4,300 square-foot facility that will create photograph-sized ceramics, a type of solid oxide fuel cells which will be used to combine hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity, heat and water. The new technology may be available to homeowners in the next three to five years.

In 2004, ENrG received a $3.3 million award from National Institute of Standards and Technology. NIST received 100 proposals for awards and funded only 30. "(ENrG) represents the cream of the crop of American technology," Gerald Caesar of NIST said. "They're really the best of the best." There is a certain risk involved with investing money into a new company like ENrG, Caesar said. "We're willing to put our money down on the table," he said.

The company also received $500,000 from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. "We're very much interested in new technology," said Kelly Tyler, a NYSERDA spokeswoman.
