The European Nanoelectronics Initiative Advisory Council (ENIAC) announced that it will be emphasizing increased energy efficiency of electronic equipment as a major research goal. According to ENIAC, as much as 30% of the world’s electrical energy consumption could be reduced by using intelligent energy management functions.
ENIAC plans to increase research for more energy efficient electronics, believing that European companies already have a leg up in energy-saving technologies. Under the ENIAC plan, industry and universities will work together in related R&D projects to focus on semiconductors and new materials. It is believed that these will eventually be able to run power supplies, motors, and lighting and computing systems with reduced power losses.
ENIAC expects the European Council to begin the ENIAC joint undertaking soon, with the EU Commission contributing more than €400 million over the next six years – as much as twice the amount expected from the member states. Following this, the EU member states will work out funding details which will then be followed by dedicated project proposals submitted by members of the network.
