Emerson Bulk Front End AC-DC Power Supply Meets Climate Savers Computing Gold Standard

July 29, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

Emerson Network Power introduced the DS460S-3 bulk front end ac-dc power supply, which the company describes as a breakthrough in efficiency and density for applications that use distributed power architectures, such as computing, storage, networking, datacom and test and measurement systems.

The DS460S-3 can achieve a high typical conversion efficiency of 92% at 50% full load, the Climate Savers Computing Gold standard. With a 1U x 2U form factor and only 7.75 inches (196.9 mm) in length, the DS460S-3 is ideal for length-limited applications and mid-plane design configurations and, at a height of only 1.6 inches (40.5 mm), is ideal for use in 1U rack-mounting equipment. This combination of form factor, density and efficiency is a first for a standard product in the power supply industry.

Rated at 460W, the DS460S-3 power supply generates a main payload output of 12Vdc and an auxiliary output of 12Vdc for powering standby circuitry. It features a wide 90 to 264Vac input voltage range and employs active power factor correction to minimize input harmonic current distortion and ensure compliance with the international EN61000-3-2 standard, with a power factor of 0.99 typical. Digitally programmable, the DS460S-3 is equipped with an I2C interface available with industry-standard PMBus™ communications protocol. The DS460S-3 also features a built-in low noise "smart" fan and holds safety certifications from UL/cUL, NEMKO, CB, and CE.

The Emerson Network Power DS460S-3 is available at the price of $189 per unit in production quantities.
