Emco Intros Q50 and Q50N 5000V Power Supplies

May 13, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Emco High Voltage Co. (Sutter Creek, CA) has announced what they term "the world's smallest 5000V power supply." The dc/dc converters, measuring 0.5" x 0.5" x 0.5", are claimed to offer performance comparable to existing products eight or more times larger. Models Q50 and Q50N (negative output polarity) accept 0 to 5Vdc input and provide 0 to 5000Vdc output. The isolated output is proportional to the input and features a typical turn-on voltage of approximately 0.7V. Isolation is 500V + Vout, and output power is 0.5W. No external components or minimum load are required. The models also feature momentary (30 seconds) short circuit protection. Ripple at full load is less than 0.5 percent peak to peak. Input current at no load is less than 250mA, and less than 400mA at full load.Applications for the high-voltage converters include avalanche photodiodes, photomultiplier tubes, light sources, piezo devices, sustaining ion pumps, electrophoresis, printers, igniters, and capacitor charging.
