Electric Fuel Corp. (New York) announced that it has donated more than 500 of the company's Instant Power cell phone chargers and batteries to New York City's Office of Emergency Management to keep rescue workers' cellphones working around the clock in the aftermath of last week's attack on the World Trade Center.
The reusable chargers make it possible to keep talking on an empty battery and recharge cell phones without electricity. The ready-to-use disposable batteries temporarily replace a phone's rechargeable battery to provide hours of emergency power.
"Workers in the current rescue effort cannot afford to be operating with a dead cell phone, and the people in charge of cell phone communications for the Office of Emergency Management knew that our chargers and batteries could provide critical backup power," said Yehuda Harats, president and CEO of Electric Fuel. "Our head office in lower Manhattan is just a 10-minute walk from where the World Trade Center used to stand, so we handed over all the inventory we had on hand to help the city keep the lines of communication open."
