dual-slot PC card power controller

October 17, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Micrel Semiconductor Inc. (San Jose, CA) recently announced it has designed a dual-slot PC card power controller with a serial control interface. Manufactured in a 24-pin SSOP and TSSOP packages, the MIC2564A is designed to interface with all popular PC card controllers, including those from O2Micro, Cirrus Logic and Texas Instruments. The MIC2564A is a power controller that supports 12V, 5V and 3.3V card power distribution. The MIC2564A-1 logic option is designed to offer independent control of Vpp and Vcc power states for increased flexibility when used with newer PC card controllers. The MIC2564A-0 is compatible with current, as well as previous, PC card controllers with serial power control interface. The on-resistance of the 5V and 3.3V power FETs is only 150 milliohms and 120 milliohms, respectively. The MIC2546A supports fully compliant PC card power distribution circuits that use three percent power supplies. To preserve the battery capacity of mobile PCs, the MIC2564A also has a low quiescent current of less than 1uA and shutdown mode. Current limiting and thermal shutdown features of the MIC2564A provide system protection in the event of a fault. The MIC2564A-0/-1BSM is currently available in 24-pin SSOP package and the TSSOP version, MIC2564A-0/-1BTS, will be available in fourth quarter 1999. In quantities of 1,000 pieces, both packages will be priced at $3.88 each.
