DTMagnetics Launches New Mini Gate Drive Transformer

September 21, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

DTMagnetics (Dover, NH) introduced a new catalog-standard FET/IGBT gate drive transformer. The new device, called a Mini Gate Drive Transformer (MGDT), is designed to compliment DTMagnetic's existing gate drive transformer (GDT) line. While closely matching GDT performance, the new MGDT requires barely half as much PCB real estate (0.6" square versus 1.2" square) and is roughly one-third the height (0.42").

The new MGDT device will feature a single-drive input and two gate outputs, and will have a unity-transfer ratio. It is optimized for use at 100KHz and is expected to withstand at least 800V continuously from gate-to-drive or gate-to-gate. The current GDT family features a toroidal-ferrite core structure. It is wound with Teflon-jacketed lead wire in order to meet various isolation requirements dictated by the major safety agencies.

DTMagnetics claims this design is the most successful standard catalog product ever offered by their company. The trend towards miniaturization throughout the industry, however, has demanded a change in the product. To meet this challenge, DTMagnetics developed the MGDT to address the issue of size. The company believes that the low-profile aspect of the MGDT package will tend to make it less susceptible to breakage in high-shock or high-vibration environments than the GDT package.

The new MGDT by DTMagnetics is currently available.
