DOE Announces Selections for Solid-State Lighting Technical Information Network

March 22, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the selection of the Consortium for Energy Efficiency and the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships to support the development of a Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Technical Information Network.

The DOE SSL Technical Information Network – comprised primarily of energy efficiency program sponsors, utilities, state and local energy offices, lighting trade groups, and others – will be designed to increase awareness of SSL technology, performance, and appropriate applications in target markets. The network will meet regularly to share information about solid-state lighting and to provide information to end-users such as retailers, builders, and consumers.

Solid-state lighting has the potential to more than double the efficiency of general lighting systems, saving energy costs for consumers and potentially reducing overall U.S. electricity consumption for lighting by roughly 33%, a savings greater than the energy consumed to illuminate all homes in the U.S. today, according to a recent DOE report, Energy Savings Potential of Solid-State Lighting in General Illumination Applications.

The Technical Information Network is a key component of DOE’s national strategy to leverage DOE’s $100 million investment in solid-state lighting R&D, and ensure that this investment pays off in commercial success by propelling solid-state lighting technology to the market.
