di/dt Presents SemiQ One-Eighth DC/DC Converters

February 07, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

di/dt Inc. (Carlsbad, CA) announced the SemiQ family of one-eighth brick dc/dc converters. The SQ48 is the first series of products in the SemiQ family that delivers up to 15A of output current with minimal or no derating at elevated temperatures and low airflow. The power density of 90W/cu-in sets a new standard for 2sq-in converter packages. The SQ48 converters are pin-for-pin compatible with larger quarter bricks, their thermal rating in typical telecom environments exceeds 20A to 30A quarter bricks, and they provide an immediate cost reduction when replacing larger converters.

The SQ48 converters come in an open-frame package that does not require a heatsink. They are assembled with 100-percent automation, have dimensions of 0.9in x 2.3in x 0.26in (22.8mm x 58.4mm x 6.6mm), and weigh only 15g (0.53oz). The SQ Series operates from an input voltage of 36V to 75V and is available in standard output voltages of 5.0V, 3.3V, 2.5V, 2.0V, 1.8V, 1.5V, 1.2V and 1.0V. The SQ Series comes in both through-hole and surface-mount packages. The surface-mount version is shipped in tape-and-reel packing to facilitate automatic handling and pick-and-place assembly.

“The introduction of the SemiQ family is a breakthrough for the telecom and datacom industries,” stated Apurba Roy, president and CEO of di/dt. “On a given circuit card, there can easily be five or more voltage rails, and conventional dc/dc converters take up large amounts of valuable board space. By supplanting the functionality and performance of quarter bricks, our SemiQ products enable customers to realize significant space and cost savings, much in the same way as our Q and QD Series of quarter bricks serve as space and cost-effective replacements for half bricks. Additionally, our customers are on a path that is rapidly leading them to 100-percent surface-mount assembly of their circuit boards, and our converters are proving to be an excellent vehicle to help get them there.”

The SQ48 converters meet the basic insulation requirements of EN60950, and come complete with vital industry-standard features, such as remote sense, input under-voltage lockout, thermal shutdown, remote on/off, output-voltage adjust pin, output over-voltage, over-current and short-circuit protection.

In quantities of 1,000 pieces, the SQ48 family is priced at $64. Samples are available now.
