Delta Electronics Intros Q48SX Quarter-Brick Converter

May 30, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Delta Electronics Inc. (Taipei, Taiwan) added the new Q48SX quarter-brick converter to its Delphi Series of board-mounted dc-dc power converters. The Q48SX converter has industry-leading efficiencies, which translate into more board space at less cost for space-constrained and cost-sensitive applications.

The Q48SX, 48 V input, single-output, isolated dc-dc converter, delivers up to 40 A of output current (2.0 V and below) or 125 W in an industry-standard, quarter-brick footprint and pinout. The Q48SX converter operates from a wide input-voltage range of 36 V to 75 V and is available in output voltages of 1.2 V to 5 V. The Q48SX units have a typical ripple and noise measurement of only 16 mV peak-to-peak for 1.2 V output at full load and only 20 mVp-p for 1.5 V and 1.8 V outputs at full load when tested with a 1 µF ceramic output capacitor.

In addition to utilizing several key patents for high-density packaging, the Q48SX converter employs another patent-pending technology in which the output trim pin also functions as secondary-side synchronization (±10%) that further reduces the output ripple and noise. The Q48SX units also have a fast transient response. When tested with no external output capacitors, the typical response is less than 60 mVp-p/30 µsec for 100% step load and 35 mVp-p/30 µsec for 25% step load (1.5 V and 1.8 V outputs).

The Delphi Series Q48SX converters are fully protected against abnormal input/output voltage, current and temperature conditions, and they meet the basic insulation requirements of EN60950. The Q48SX modules offer monotonic startup into normal or pre-biased loads and are available in both surface-mount or through-hole packages. Sample quantities of Delta’s Delphi Q48SX converters are available. In OEM quantities of 1,000 pieces, the unit price is $44. Standard lead-time is from stock to eight weeks, depending on the volume.
