Cornell Dubilier (Liberty, SC) introduced a new series of ac-rated capacitors, the Type PD capacitor, with totally dry construction. The series is rated for operation from -55 to 70 degrees C and has capacitance charges of no more than ±2 percent from -40 to 75 degrees C. The Type PD capacitor has a plastic case and has no need for grounding.
The new technology used in the Type PD capacitor, a segmented-metallized-electrode system, permits operation at high ac voltages without oil. The capacitor element is wound with metallized polypropylene film in which the metallization is partitioned into small areas connected to adjacent areas by thin connections that act as fuses should the dielectric fail. This protection system is UL810 approved for 10,000-amp fault current protection.
Type PD capacitors have a service life of 60,000 hours. They are environmentally benign, with capacitance ranging from 3 to 70 µF at ±10 percent. Rated voltage is 240 to 440Vac, with a dissipation factor of no more than 0.15 percent at 120Hz. Case sizes are cylindrical and measure from 1.18" x 2.25" to 1.97" x 4.7". Terminals are quarter-inch quick connect, one blade per terminal with optional two-blades per terminal.
