Cherokee Introduces New 1U, 2500W Front End/Rectifier

January 03, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Cherokee International announced its CAR2500 series of front end/rectifiers for network routers and switches, enterprise servers, telecommunications equipment, and industrial ATE applications. The CAR2500 is designed as a customizable power platform — a flexible building block to satisfy specific OEM power applications.

With a power density of 27W per cubic inch and an efficiency of 92%, the company claims that the new CAR2500 series is an unparalleled distributed-power- architecture solution. This new platform is feature rich with more built-in intelligence and flexibility. An onboard microcontroller, equipped with a 10 bit analog-to-digital converter, allows for a far more accurate temperature, current, and voltage sensing capability. Automatic fan speed control regulates the internal supply temperature for increased reliability and audible noise control. The CAR2500 also offers greater flexibility by supporting many interfaces such as I2C, PMBus, and Ethernet protocols.

Measuring 1.61 x 4.00 x 14.25", the CAR2500 front end/rectifier series delivers -54Vdc at 46.3A for high-line operations of 230Vac with standby voltage of either 3.3 or 5V at 1A to power external housekeeping and monitoring circuitry. Narrow enough to fit up to four units side-by-side in a 1U power shelf, the CAR2500 series can supply up to 10,000W or 7,500W N+1 redundant power.

A thermally controlled fan enables -10 to +70°C operation and also a -40°C startup capability – suitable for uncontrolled environmental conditions such as outdoor telecom equipment, radio frequency (RF) amplifiers, and wireless applications. Additional features include hot-swap and fault redundancy, active single-wire load sharing, output voltage programming, current readout, remote on/off and front plate LEDs. Protection features on the rectifier include input over and under voltage, output over voltage, over temperature and over current.

The CAR2500 Series is currently offered in two models, the +48 volt output (CAR2548FP) and the -54V output (CAR2548TN) to support the most common DPA architectures, isolated and non-isolated. The +12V output (CAR2512FP) will be available soon. A supporting system shelf, ACE254, is also available and fits in standard 19-inch telecom cabinets. The ACE254 rack comes in a 4-bay redundant, hot swap configuration offering scalability up to 10,000W. The universal rack supports the CAR2500 family of +48 and -54V output versions.

The CAR2500 series is priced at $399 in OEM volumes. The ACE254 universal rack, which supports the 48 and -54V versions, is priced at $255 in OEM volumes.
