September 21, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Cherokee International LLC (Tustin, CA) recently released its VRM 8.4 regulator module. The new CVRM 8.4 represents the most recent addition to the company's line of catalog dc/dc products. Cherokee's CVRM 8.4 regulator modules are designed to meet the power-condition requirements of the Intel Pentium II Xeon and Pentium III Xeon processor-based systems. The CVRM provides power conditioning for these processors used in single- and multi-processor server class systems. It is backward compatible with previous VRM modules meeting VRM 8.2 and 8.3 specifications. The series has three models, one with a 12Vdc input, another with a 5Vdc input, and a third universal model that will take either a 5Vdc or 12Vdc input.

Other features include current sharing for (N+1) configuration, an efficiency of 85 percent and over at various voltages at 25 degrees C, a programmable voltage from between 1.3V to 3.5V through a five-bit VID code, as well as over-current and short-circuit protection. Additionally, there is over-voltage protection through a fuse and input crowbar, remote sense, no minimum load required, and UL1950 recognition. The VRM 8.4 regulator module is also CSA C22.2 No. 950-95 certified and VDE 0805 licensed.
