Bolder Tech Announces TMF-Powered Electric Motorcycle Sets New Speed Record

Bolder Technologies (Golden, CO) announced that a TMF-powered electric motorcycle set a new national speed record June 5, 1999. The quarter mile time was 13.995 seconds, which represents the fastest official time recorded for an electric motorcycle in the quarter mile. This compares with a quarter mile time of 12.7 seconds set by a Dodge Viper powered by a 450hp V-10. The "Killa-Cycle" was designed and built by Bill Dube, an engineer at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. He used 64 lbs. of Bolder's TMF battery cells, which are rechargeable batteries based on their patented Thin Metal Film technology.Dube said, "For this shakedown run, I limited the power to 120hp, less than half of what the machine can produce." Dube said that his set-up "severely reduced the motor voltage and torque," but that he was "still easily able to set a record while testing the stability and safety." He credited the TMF cells with making the feat possible, saying, "They have the highest power-to-weight ratio of any battery currently in production. This makes TMF cells ideal for applications requiring high amperage for short periods or the ability to recharge very quickly."
