November 12, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Belkin Components (Compton, CA) has introduced its Universal Travel Surge protectors, the F5C790-C6 and F5C790-C8. Claimed to be small and lightweight, the Belkin Universal Travel Surge provides laptop phone and modem protection from ac power disturbances, both domestically and internationally.

The Belkin Universal Travel Surge offers an in-line design with complete automatic multi-voltage protection. A 6ft retractable phone cord is integrated in the design for easy cord management and cord protection. The unit also provides an over-current detection for line-pulse signals common in many 240V environments. Additionally, the Belkin Universal Travel Surge is designed to be compatible with most laptop computers. Among its features is an automatic voltage switching sensor and a protection light indicator.

"In designing the Universal Travel Surge, we wanted to create a mobile laptop surge protector that could be used most anytime, anywhere, throughout the globe," said Michael Galardi, product manager for the power-protection line at Belkin Components.

"Aside from the protection that these units provide, ease of use was also a major concern for us. That is why we provide easy cord management with a retractable hideaway feature."

The Universal Travel Surge will be available to ship in North America on the first of January, 2001, and will have a retail value of $34.99.
