Battery Engineering Inc. (Canton, MA) has developed a fire-safe, rechargeable, lithium-battery system. The new battery system, developed for Cairns and Brother's (Clifton, NJ) new CairnsVIPER hand-held thermal imaging system for fire fighting, delivers the high power needed for advanced thermal imaging in a lightweight, environmentally-friendly package that withstands high heat.
The battery provides up to 90 minutes of continuous operation, will not explode or emit harmful gas materials at elevated temperatures, and will not burn without direct contact to a flame. The battery has minimal self-discharge, no memory effect and can be recharged up to 1,000 times. A built-in charge-state meter displays the remaining charge clearly.
The battery is a flat, lithium-ion polymer cell measuring 123 x 30 x 10mm. It fits within the body of the camera and comes with a customized charger, created specifically for this battery. The system offers 1.8Ah of rechargeable capacity at 8.4V.
