Batteries for Challenging Loads and Service Conditions of Utility Applications

January 24, 2018 by Paul Shepard

EnerSys® has introduced the PowerSafe® ESG battery, designed to provide 185 to 960 amp-hours (Ah) of capacity range to handle the challenging load profiles and service conditions of utility applications.

The configuration of five multi-cell 4-volt units (185-, 234-, 281-, 354- and 418-Ah) reduces the footprint of the PowerSafe® ESG battery to enable minimal occupation of floor space. Individual terminal posts on each cell facilitate integration of battery monitoring and test equipment used in routine maintenance and inspection.

The Slide-Lock™ post seal accommodates natural plate growth over time for maximum reliability and reduced maintenance. Additionally, the tongue-and-groove jar-to-cover seal provides a robust airtight seal.

“PowerSafe® ESG batteries are engineered with proprietary materials and design features to deliver the performance and service life utility applications require,” said George Brendahl, utilities product manager, EnerSys. “Their thick grids ensure long-duration discharge performance and extended life.”

The capacity range of 185 to 960 Ah is rated at eight hours to 1.75 volts per cell (Vpc) at 77°F (25°C). Initial capacity is rated at 100 percent. Other features of the PowerSafe® ESG battery include cast lead posts with copper inserts and a dual-hole design that can handle the most demanding one-minute rates, which are characteristic of utility load profiles.

The ESG line offers a 20-year life expectancy in float service at 77°F (25°C) ambient temperature.
