AVX Corp. Adds New 0306 Low-Inductance Chip Capacitor

March 15, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

AVX Corp. (Myrtle Beach, SC) expanded its line of passive components with the addition of the 0306 low-inductance chip capacitor. Designed for use in high-speed circuits, these devices are suitable for use in microprocessor-decoupling applications in computers and servers. They are available in X7R and Y5V dielectrics, with voltage ratings from 10V to 25V. The new capacitors are suitable for use in high-temperature applications.

The 0306 chips have a low profile, making them surface-mountable on printed circuit boards. They may also be mounted on inside cavities, adjacent to the IC itself. AVX claims that reverse geometry termination and smaller case size have reduced the inductance of the capacitors by half, compared to conventionally-terminated chips of comparable capacitance and voltage ratings. The chips are available in X7R and Y5V dielectrics, with capacitance values ranging from .001µF to 0.1µF. They have voltage ratings of 10V, 16V and 25V. Standard capacitance tolerances are ±10 percent and ±20 percent, with operating temperatures ranging from -55 to 125 degrees C. A high-reliability version is also available.

The 0306 low-inductance chip capacitors are available with leadtimes from four to eight weeks. Depending on capacitor value, prices range from $0.05 to $0.15 each.
