AVX Announces MultiGuard Series of Bi-Directional TVS

April 24, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

AVX Corp. (Myrtle Beach, SC) introduced its MultiGuard Series of bi-directional transient voltage suppressors (TVS) in new, smaller case sizes. The new series is designed to provide bi-directional ESD protection, EMI attenuation and subnanosecond response time. The MultiGuard chips are now available in 0405 two-element, 0508 two- and four-element and 0612 four-element case sizes.

Suitable for I/O lines in portable equipment and programming ports in cellular phones, the MultiGuard family devices may be used on any electronic PCB containing multiple TVS chips of the same voltage/energy rating. The MultiGuard chips are available with standard working voltages of 5.6V, 9V, 14V, and 18V. The arrays have a typical capacitance range from less than 225pF to 825pF. These transient voltage suppressor arrays are rated for operation from -55 degrees C to 125 degrees C. A StaticGuard version is also available, with capacitance at less than 75pF, rated at less than or equal to 18V/.05 joules.

According to AVX product manager Vance DeFelice, “These TVS arrays provide ideal alternatives where multiple lines require ESD protection," said DeFelice. “The two-element and four-element arrays offer design engineers effective alternatives to the more time-consuming and expensive placement of multiple discrete components. That translates into higher productivity, lower inventory costs and more available PCB space."

The MultiGuard Series arrays are packaged by tape-and-reel in 1,000; 4,000 and 10,000 piece quantities and are compatible with high-speed placement equipment. Typical pricing for the chips ranges from $0.12 to $0.26 in quantities of 100,000, dependent upon case size and value. The MultiGuard Series has lead times of eight weeks.
