AVX and ECR Limited Intro BestCap Pulse Supercapacitor

November 28, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

AVX (Myrtle Beach, SC) has announced the new BestCap (Battery Energy Saving Technology Capacitor) product. These electromechanical supercapacitors are based on an aqueous rechargeable hydrogen ion solid state (RHISS) chemistry which is suited for high-power pulsing and designed for use in hand-held and mobile communications equipment to extend battery life. RHISS also results in an environmentally-friendly, non-hazardous material.

Developed in partnership with ECR Limited (Hampshire, England), BestCap provides high capacitance and low equivalent series resistance (ESR) per unit volume. The polymer electrolyte system is capable of construction down to 0.7mm. Voltages from one to ten volts can be offered.

Initial evaluation samples have voltage specifications of 5.5V, capacitance of between 60 and 200 millifarads, and ESR value of 40 to 100 milliohms, depending on size. Package options are 27mm x 17mm x 2.5mm and 48mm x 30mm x 2.5mm. BestCap is currently available for sampling.
