Avago Technologies Introduces New High-Brightness, Long-Life Subminiature Lamps For Industrial & Consumer Applications

December 05, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Avago Technologies introduced a new series of high-brightness Red, Green, Blue and Amber subminiature light emitting diode (LED) lamps for use in a variety of industrial and consumer applications where space is limited. This series of what are described as highly reliable, long-life subminiature lamps are available in un-tinted, non-diffused packages and have a slim 2.8mm design. Avago’s ASMT-Bx20 is well suited for use in industrial applications such as panel indicators, button, symbol and liquid crystal display (LCD) backlighting.

Avago’s ASMT-Bx20 high-brightness subminiature LEDs, which feature a smooth radiation pattern and narrow 15-degree viewing angle, are described as high performance energy efficient LEDs that have been developed to perform with reliability in temperatures ranging from -40 to +85°C. The ability to operate reliably over such a wide temperature range is said to be beneficial to designers building industrial applications that must have a long product life.

With its slim design, Avago’s ASMT-Bx20 is packaged in a small, clear surface mount package and is compatible with automated placement equipment, as well as infrared and vapor phase reflow soldering processes.

Among the products’ more notable features are: a small footprint and low profile package design; package dimensions of 3.2 x 2.4 x 2.4mm; a high intensity output of 650mcd @ 20mA for red, blue and green, and 750mcd @ 20mA for Amber; a smooth and consistent spatial radiation pattern; low power consumption; a non-diffused dome for high-brightness; are available in 8mm tape on 7" (17.8mm) diameter reels; are compatible with lead-free reflow soldering processes; and are Pb-free and RoHs compliant.

Avago’s ASMT-Bx20 subminiature LED lamps are priced around $0.10 to $0.15 depending on the color.
